Things to Do in Naples Italy

Date

Naples is the third largest city in Italy and full of great culture, history, and delicious food. Unfortunately, it still gets a bad rap for its crime and filth. Most areas are generally safe, but you want to take precautions with your belongings and avoid being ripped off by tourist scams. I personally never felt unsafe. I loved Naples because it offered all three things I look for in a destination. The culture is rich, and you feel like you are truly in Italy with the Napoleon traditions. There are so many historic places to see like the castles, catacombs, churches, etc. It’s also the birthplace of pizza, it’s unbelievable! On top of it all, it’s on the coast of the Tyrrhenian sea which provides you with a great seaside view. Below are some of the things I would suggest while visiting Naples.

WALK THE LUNGOMARE DI NAPOLI

The Lungomare Di Napoli is about a 2 mile stretch along the seafront and one of the most beautiful views in Italy! You’ll  pass many local street venues, pizzarias, and have a great view of Mount Vesuvius. If you want to get out of the crowd for a second, take a break and stop at Rotonda di Via Nazario Sauro. The location has a great view, and you can take a small 10 min boat ride along the coast for 5 Euros each.

CATACOMBS OF SAN GENNARO

The Catacombs of San Gennaro date back to the 2nd Century AD. It’s the oldest cemetery in Naples and considered by many to be the most significant paleo-christian ruins in Italy south of Rome. The tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and explain things thoroughly and to the point. The entrance fee is around 10 Euros per person, and the tour lasts 45 min to an hour.

BASILICA DELL’ INCORONATA

If you visit the Catacombs of San Gennaro, make sure you go visit the beautiful cathedral that stands right next to the catacombs. With it’s beautiful architecture and paintings, it’s worth the stop!

VIA TOLEDO

Via Toledo is an ancient street in Naples that is known for its shopping. The street gets very crowded, but it’s a sight you may not want to miss. Whether you are actually shopping or just walking along Via Toledo, make sure you look up the narrow side streets. You’ll find some of the best local restaurants and shops. Once off the main street, it will feel like you’re in the real roots of Italy.

PIAZZA DEL PLEBISCITO

Piazza del Plebiscito is known to be one of the most elegant spots in Naples. It’s a huge open area that is surrounded by the beautiful Basilica of Reale Pontificia San Francesco da Paola and Palazzo Reale di Napoli. It’s a perfect spot to take photos or just sit down and people watch.

NAPOLI SOTTERRANEA

Definitely take the time to tour the underground of Naples. They will give you a guided tour that is very informative and intriguing. You’ll get a better understanding of the Naples history and how it went from Roman Ruins to Caverns used as bomb shelters in WWII.

NAPLES CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral of Naples, also known as Saint Gennaro, is the main church in Naples. This Cathedral is famous for a miracle that occurs three times a year aptly named ‘Miracle of the Blood’. The cathedral is where they house the blood of Saint Januarius. The blood for unexplained reasons liquifies three times a year. If it fails to liquify, legend has it that disaster will befall Naples.
